Pauper: Green Stompy

MTGO user Servemais took this Stompy list to a 6-1 finish in a recent Pauper Challenge.

I can’t be surprised Stompy is one of the best decks. Modern Masters 3 gave us Burning-Tree Emissary at common. Stompy was already solid but why not have Burning-Tree? Spam more creatures. Could even spam a bunch of Burning-Tree Emissaries.

If your idea of fun is just going as wide as possible with Rancor backup, this is your deck. It’s only about 35 tix on MTGO at the moment.

Really I just want to play this deck because of Rancor. It’s the best green card probably ever.

Budget Modern: Mono White Tokens

I saw this at my local game store recently and figured I could make a post about it.

This deck didn’t win a lot but there were some games that it just stomped people. Not every deck can handle someone going as wide as this deck does.

First you go wide with a bunch of tokens, then they get big with the Intangible Virtue and Honor of the Pure. Intangible also gives them vigilance.

Even decks like Storm can have trouble with this deck because Anointer Priest’s life gain. Infect can be rough for this but it’s possible to block everything of theirs except Blighted Agent.

If you don’t want to be super budget like this list is I’d take out Timely Reinforcements for Path to Exiles. Timely can go in the sideboard for burn and aggro matches.

Budget Modern: No Rares Mono Red Burn

I’ve brewed budget burn before but this one doesn’t even have a single rare. It’s all commons and uncommons.

Gameplay is simple. Send damage to your opponent. Don’t worry about their creatures. Just all damage all to the dome.

The only real strategy you need here if you suspend Rift Bolts before doing anything else, and you wait until the final shot(s) to play Shard Volleys.

Otherwise, sometimes you have to wait for them to play Kitchen Finks so you can go Skullcrack/Flames of the Blood Hand in response to stop the life gain.

8 Whack Updates for Ixalan

Ixalan has been out for a minute now and has a couple goblins worth looking at. Not Lightning-Rig Crew or Rummaging Goblin though. Neither of them do anywhere close towhat 8 Whack needs.

Wily Goblin looks like it could’ve been almost sorta playable. The treasure token is nice because sometimes it’s hard to get the third land for Goblin King or Goblin Chieftain. If it were a one drop or if it had two power I think it could maybe fit in. But being a 1/1 for RR makes it basically unplayable.

Rigging Runner however has potential. One drop 1/1 with first strike. Okay this is fine so far. Raid trigger gives it a +1/+1 counter though. That means turn two you can attack with your Goblin Guide or Legion Loyalist then drop two of these as 2/2s with first strike. Seems okay to me.

The question comes down to what to play it over. Maybe Mogg Fanatic? Move Fanatic to the sideboard and bring it in for Infect to take care of Hierarch/Glistener Elf/Blighted Agent.
