Video: Pauper Stompy vs Mono Blue Delver

MTGO user _DissonancE_ piloted Stompy to a 6-1 finish in a recent Pauper Challenge on Magic Online.

I netdecked it card for card because I’m lazy and can’t build decks worth a good gosh darn. The deck is fun. There aren’t any real Wrath of God effects in Pauper so you just go wide and hope you go wider than your opponent.

This match in particular was lucky for me. Like I’m lucky I didn’t Dazed for days. Triple Burning-Tree Emissary was also great.

Having several reps with the deck so far, it seems real strong. I might even take it into a league. See if I can stomp my way through to grind out some tickets.

Pro Tour Rivals of Ixalan Top 8 Luis Salvatto Lantern Control

Luis Salvatto won Pro Tour Rivals of Ixalan this past weekend with Lantern Control.

Yeah, Lantern Control. The bane of every Modern player’s existence except for Lantern players themselves. It’s a good deck though and I can’t blame people for wanting to win.

Luis Salvatto definitely earned his win. He got a game loss in the quarter finals of top eight for not un-sideboarding correctly when game one began. That would tilt most players hard. Luis came through though. He managed to win the next two games and advance to the semi finals.

He eventually took down Gerry Thompson in the finals 3-0.

I don’t know if any bannings will come from this. I hope not though. Now that it won a Pro Tour, it should get hated out of the metagame.

Pro Tour Rivals of Ixalan Top 8 Pascal Vieren UR Pyromancer

This past weekend Pascal Vieren made top eight of Pro Tour Rivals of Ixalan with blue-red Young Pyromancer.

I forgot Thing in the Ice was a card. It had some fun times in Standard but I didn’t know it would be Modern playable. Turns out having Serum Visions, Opt, Lightning Bolt, and good counterspells like Mana Leak and Remand changes things.

Add Young Pyromancer to all that for tempo swings and you’ve got yourself a spicy brew. Snapcaster Mage also helps a ton with basically everything. Snappy still gives you the Bolt-Snap-Bolt play.

The deck is just answers, cantrips, and choosing to either go wide or go big. Maybe you do a bit of both depending on the matchup.

Pro Tour Rivals of Ixalan Top 8 Jean-Emmanual Depraz Traverse Shadow

It’s been a minute since I’ve seen green in a Death’s Shadow deck. Maybe it’s been there and I just didn’t notice. Either way it’s in the top 8 of Pro Tour Ixalan piloted by Jean-Emmanual Depraz.

Green gives you some good stuff. Specially Traverse the Ulvenwald. Fixes mana or grabs you a creature.

Other than that it gets you some good creatures. Tarmogoyf is a good reason to play green and Grim Flayer is basically Tarmogoyf number five. Also Abrupt Decay which I have to assume is nuts against Grixis Shadow decks. They’re confident with their Stubborn Denials and you’re just like “Nah, uncounterable and your Death’s Shadow is now Dead Shadow”. The green also helps with Ancient Grudge in the sideboard.

I like seeing Liliana. the Last Hope and Hostage Taker in the sideboard. Newer cards affecting non rotating formats is a good thing. Mostly I like Hostage Taker because I didn’t think it would see Modern play. But here we are and I’m loving it.
